Diesel vs Solar: The Real Cost Comparison in Nigeria

5.0(3 reviews)

A 100kva diesel generator run 12 hours a day in Nigeria costs roughly ₦2.1M–₦2.8M per month in fuel, maintenance, and parts. An equivalent 100kw commercial solar system costs approximately ₦400,000–₦550,000 per month amortized over its 20-year lifespan — a saving of roughly 75–80%, with typical payback in 20–26 months.

Monthly Cost: Diesel Generator vs 100kw Solar System

Based on a Nigerian commercial property running a 100–150kva generator 10–12 hours a day. Figures amortize solar system cost over a 20-year panel lifespan; diesel figures use pump price and typical maintenance intervals as of the verification date above.

Why the Gap Is This Large

Diesel generators have two cost problems solar doesn't: fuel is a recurring, inflation-exposed cost, and mechanical parts (alternators, injectors, engine overhauls) wear down on a fixed schedule regardless of how carefully a generator is maintained. Since fuel subsidy removal, diesel pump prices have moved sharply, and every Naira of that increase lands directly on a business's monthly overhead with no way to fix or hedge it.

Solar has the opposite cost shape: a large cost upfront, essentially zero fuel cost afterward, and a maintenance schedule (panel cleaning, inverter checks) that's a fraction of a diesel generator's. Once a system is paid off — typically 20–26 months for a mid-size commercial property — the remaining 18+ years of its life produce power at a small fraction of the diesel-equivalent cost.

The comparison isn't close once you run it past year three. It's close in year one, when the upfront solar cost is still being recovered — which is the number most businesses anchor on, and the reason the true 10-year gap surprises people.

What Businesses Say After Switching

5.0 out of 5based on 3 reviews

"We were spending heavily on diesel every month just to keep production running. Olasupo Energy designed the system around our actual factory load, and the difference in our monthly operating costs has been significant. The installation team was professional and the handover was smooth."

Chinedu Okafor

Operations Director, Manufacturing, Lagos

"Power reliability is extremely important for our hotel because our guests should never have to notice when the grid goes down. Olasupo Energy built a hybrid system that keeps our critical operations running through outages. Their engineers understood our requirements from the beginning and delivered exactly what we needed."

Tunde Adeyemi

General Manager, Hospitality, Abuja

"What stood out to us was that Olasupo handled the engineering, equipment supply and installation themselves. We weren't passed between different contractors. The system has made a noticeable difference to our diesel consumption and gives us much more confidence in keeping our operations running."

Diesel vs Solar — Common Questions

Is solar actually cheaper than diesel in Nigeria?

Yes, over the life of the system. Diesel has a lower upfront cost but a high recurring fuel and maintenance cost that compounds every month. Solar has a higher upfront cost but near-zero fuel cost afterward. For a typical 100kva/100kw commercial comparison, solar overtakes diesel in total cost by month 20–26 and is dramatically cheaper by year 10.

How much does diesel cost a Nigerian business per month?

A business running a 100–150kva generator 10–12 hours a day typically spends ₦2,100,000–₦2,800,000 per month on fuel alone, before maintenance and part replacement costs.

What happens to solar cost if diesel prices keep rising?

Nothing — that's the core advantage. Once a solar system is installed, its cost is fixed. Diesel cost is fully exposed to pump price changes, so every future fuel price increase widens the gap in solar's favor.

Can I run diesel and solar together instead of switching fully?

Yes. Most Nigerian businesses adopt a hybrid setup — solar and battery storage cover daytime and evening load, with a generator kept as backup for extended cloudy periods. This still cuts diesel consumption by 70–85% versus running the generator as primary power.
